On November 9, 1933, in the depths of the Great Depression, eight hundred invited guests gathered in Hollywood to honour Marie Dressler, the top movie moneymaker in the world on her 65th birthday. After the gala dinner, tributes from Marie’s friends and colleagues were broadcast over an international radio hookup which included Cobourg, Ontario, Canada, the town where Marie was born.
